Behind the right arm of sophomore Justin Wendling, the clutch hitting of senior Elias Hajjar and junior Zach Pierson, and flawless defense, the Club Baseball Buckeyes came up huge, beating Miami(OH) 5-1 in a one-game playoff for the GLC South crown.
Wendling was the story of the game, silencing the RedHawk bats. In seven innings of work in his first career start for the Bucks, Wendling allowed just four hits, one walk, and one run while striking out three. The win puts him at 5-0 on the year and drops his ERA to a miniscule 1.15.
Meanwhile, the Buckeye sticks rallied around Hajjar, whose third inning double (the team’s first hit of the night) plated the game’s first run. Then, with OSU up 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Pierson smoked a double to rightfield, bringing in two much needed insurance runs.
With the win, the Buckeyes will travel to Ottawa Hills (just outside of Toledo) this Saturday and Sunday to take on GLC North champion Bowling Green, with the winner heading to Bradenton, Florida to play in the NCBA World Series.
